Does prescription antiperspirant help with body odour?

Body odour develops when sweat is changed by bacteria on the skin. Prescription antiperspirant, often an aluminium chloride preparation, reduces sweat released from treated glands for a period of time. Less moisture can mean less opportunity for odour to develop, particularly in the underarms, hands, or feet. It is different from a deodorant, which mainly masks or reduces odour without targeting sweat production. Odour can still continue if it comes from infection, a skin fold problem, clothing, diet, medicines, or another health issue.

Follow the prescribed instructions carefully; many products are applied to completely dry skin and washed off as directed. Avoid applying it immediately after shaving or to broken, inflamed, or irritated skin unless your clinician says otherwise. Stop and seek advice if burning, swelling, blistering, or a persistent rash develops. Wash and dry areas prone to odour, change damp clothing, and let footwear dry. These steps support treatment but do not replace finding a cause when odour is new or persistent.

Arrange a medical review if odour appears suddenly, persists despite hygiene and treatment, affects one area unusually, or occurs with pain, redness, discharge, fever, or a rash. A clinician can check whether sweating, infection, or another condition is contributing and may change the treatment plan.
