Does premarital screening treat thalassaemia?

Thalassaemia is an inherited condition affecting haemoglobin production. A person may have the disease or carry a thalassaemia trait, sometimes without obvious symptoms. Premarital screening uses blood tests to look for signs of an inherited haemoglobin disorder. It does not change genes, correct anaemia, or treat thalassaemia. An unusual result may need confirmatory testing because iron deficiency and other blood findings can affect interpretation. Counselling helps both partners understand the result and possible inheritance.

Keep the reports for both partners and ask the screening service to explain whether each result suggests a trait, disease, or further testing. Do not start iron supplements solely because a blood test shows anaemia; iron deficiency should be confirmed and treatment guided by a clinician. If thalassaemia is already diagnosed, continue its planned specialist care. A genetic counsellor can discuss reproductive options in a private, non-directive conversation.

Seek medical advice promptly when screening suggests Thalassaemia or a carrier state, especially before pregnancy. Arrange urgent assessment for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, extreme weakness, or sudden worsening in someone with known thalassaemia. Screening provides information; it does not replace treatment for anaemia or other complications.
