What vision changes may indicate
Pre-eclampsia can affect blood pressure and the way the nervous system and eyes function. Changes may be brief or persistent and can occur with headache, upper abdominal pain, sudden swelling, nausea, or feeling unwell. Migraine or an eye problem may produce similar symptoms, but pregnancy-related vision changes still warrant clinical advice.
A maternity team may check your blood pressure, urine, blood tests, and your baby's wellbeing. Explain exactly what you saw, when it began, whether it affected one or both eyes, and whether it has returned.

Contact your maternity unit or obstetric clinician immediately when you notice new vision changes. Sit or lie somewhere safe while arranging help, and do not drive if your vision is impaired. Avoid taking new medicine for the symptom unless a clinician has confirmed it is suitable in pregnancy.

Seek emergency maternity care now for sudden or severe vision loss, flashing lights with a severe headache, weakness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, trouble breathing, severe upper abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait for the symptom to disappear before seeking advice.
