Can polycystic ovary syndrome cause periods to stop?

Polycystic ovary syndrome can change the balance of hormones involved in ovulation. Without regular ovulation, bleeding may become widely spaced or stop for a period of time. This pattern is sometimes called amenorrhoea. Stopped periods are not specific to PCOS: pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause transition, underactive thyroid, major stress, substantial changes in exercise or nutrition, and some medicines can also be involved.

Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible, even when your periods have been irregular. Keep a record of bleeding, pelvic symptoms, acne, new hair growth, and medicines. Book an appointment if periods remain absent, stop repeatedly, or change after previously being predictable. A clinician can discuss your cycle history and decide whether pregnancy testing, hormone checks, or another evaluation is appropriate.

Get urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy bleeding, particularly when pregnancy is possible. Seek prompt advice for new vision problems, severe headaches, or unexpected breast discharge. Periods that stop for a prolonged stretch also warrant a review, because the underlying cause and the effect of infrequent bleeding on the uterine lining may need attention.
