Does pneumonia cause shortness of breath?

Inflammation and fluid in affected parts of the lungs can make each breath feel harder. You may notice breathlessness while walking, speaking, or resting, with a faster breathing pattern, chest discomfort, cough, fever, or unusual tiredness. The severity can change over time. Asthma, heart problems, blood clots, and other conditions can also cause breathlessness, so the symptom needs clinical context.

Stop exertion, sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and seek medical advice promptly. Keep prescribed inhalers available if you have been told to use them, but do not borrow another person's medicine. Avoid smoking. Tell the clinician when the breathlessness began, what activity brings it on, whether it is worsening, and whether you have chest pain, fever, or blue lips.

Call emergency services if you are struggling to breathe, cannot speak in full sentences, develop blue or grey lips, become confused, faint, or have severe chest pain. Urgent help is also needed if breathlessness rapidly worsens or occurs with marked weakness. Do not drive yourself if breathing is severely impaired or you feel faint.
