Does pneumonia cause coughing up phlegm?

Infection and inflammation in the air sacs and nearby airways can increase mucus. Coughing helps move that mucus out, so sputum may be clear, white, yellow, or green. A change in colour does not by itself show whether an infection is bacterial or whether antibiotics are needed. Pneumonia may also cause tiredness, fever, chest discomfort, or breathlessness, and symptoms can vary between people.

Seek medical advice if a phlegmy cough comes with fever, breathlessness, chest pain, unusual sleepiness, or symptoms that are getting worse. Drink fluids if this is safe for you, rest, and avoid smoking or second-hand smoke. Follow any prescribed treatment as directed. Do not start leftover antibiotics, since the right treatment depends on the examination and likely cause.

Get urgent help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, develop blue or grey lips, become confused, faint, or have severe chest pain. A rapidly worsening cough or inability to keep fluids down also warrants urgent assessment. Children, older adults, and people with significant heart, lung, or immune conditions may need earlier medical review.
