Does pityriasis alba cause white patches on skin?

Pityriasis alba is a common skin condition that produces lighter, often slightly dry or scaly patches. The patches may be round or irregular and are frequently noticed on the cheeks, around the mouth, or on the arms. Mild itch can occur, but some people notice only a difference in colour. The contrast may look stronger after tanning because the surrounding skin becomes darker.

Pale patches have several possible causes, including eczema, fungal infection, and conditions that reduce pigment more substantially. A clinician can assess the texture, borders, distribution, and scale instead of relying on colour alone.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser if the patches feel dry, and avoid scrubbing or picking at them.
