Does physiotherapy help with lower back pain?

Short answer

Physiotherapy can help lower back pain by improving movement, building supportive strength, and teaching safer ways to manage daily activities.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How physiotherapy may help

A physiotherapist first considers where the pain is, what movements aggravate it, how long it has been present, and how it affects sleep, work, walking or lifting. Treatment may include gentle mobility work, exercises for the trunk, hips and legs, and advice about pacing activity. Hands-on techniques may be used alongside exercise when appropriate. The plan should match your examination findings rather than follow a fixed routine.

Pain can come from muscles, joints, discs or other causes, so an assessment cannot promise that physiotherapy is suitable for every person. Staying active within tolerable limits is often part of recovery; prolonged bed rest can make movement harder.

What to expect from an appointment

Bring a clear description of when the pain started, any leg symptoms, and tasks you now avoid. Wear clothing that lets you move comfortably. Your therapist may ask you to bend, walk or change position, then set a home programme with manageable repetitions. Follow the plan consistently, but stop an exercise that causes sharp or spreading pain and report it.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, marked weakness in a leg, or severe pain after a major injury. Arrange medical assessment for fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, or pain that is worsening or not settling. These features may need investigation before an exercise programme.

Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist

Ask what may be contributing to your pain, which movements are suitable now, how to modify work or lifting, and what changes should prompt a review.

Questions people ask

Can physiotherapy make lower back pain worse?

Temporary muscle soreness can occur after new exercises, but sharp, spreading or steadily worsening pain should be reported so the plan can be adjusted.

Do I need a scan before physiotherapy?

Not always. A clinician decides whether imaging is needed from your history and examination, especially when warning signs are present.
