Does photodermatitis cause sun sensitivity?

Photodermatitis is an inflammatory skin reaction linked to light exposure. Affected areas may become red, itchy, warm, tender, or bumpy after time outdoors. The reaction often appears on skin that receives sunlight, such as the face, neck, forearms, and backs of the hands, while covered areas may be less affected. In some people, a medicine, plant, fragrance, or skincare ingredient makes the skin more reactive to light. The timing and pattern can help a clinician distinguish photodermatitis from other rashes, but sun sensitivity has several possible causes.

Symptoms can continue after leaving the sun because inflammation takes time to settle. Blistering, swelling, or peeling may occur in a stronger reaction. Avoiding the trigger can reduce repeat flares, although the correct trigger is not always obvious from one episode.

Move out of direct sunlight when symptoms begin and cover exposed skin with tightly woven clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Use shade and plan outdoor activity away from the strongest midday light. Do not start or stop a prescribed medicine on your own; instead, make a list of medicines, supplements, plants, fragrances, and new skin products used before the rash appeared. A cool compress may soothe discomfort. Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare and avoid scrubbing or picking irritated skin. A clinician can advise whether a sunscreen is suitable for your skin and whether testing or a medication review is needed.

Arrange a medical assessment if the rash keeps returning, spreads beyond sun-exposed skin, becomes painful, or does not improve after avoiding light. Seek prompt care for extensive blistering, marked swelling, fever, pus, or eye involvement. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, faintness, or swelling of the lips or tongue, which can signal a severe allergic reaction. A clinician may review the timing of exposure and products or medicines, examine the rash, and decide whether a dermatology referral is appropriate.
