Does a PET-CT scan treat cancer of unknown primary?

A PET-CT combines a CT picture of body structures with information about how tissues take up a tracer. Areas with increased activity may stand out, helping the team map disease and look for a possible starting site. Uptake is not specific to cancer, because inflammation and infection can also change the images.

For cancer of unknown primary, the scan may help choose the safest or most useful area for biopsy and show where disease is located. It cannot by itself name the original cancer or replace tissue examination. The results are interpreted with your symptoms, examination, pathology, and other tests.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and arriving for the appointment. Tell staff if you have diabetes, could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have difficulty lying still. After the scan, ask when the report will be reviewed and whether a biopsy or additional testing is planned.

Bring previous scan reports and a list of medicines to the oncology appointment. Ask how the PET-CT findings change the next decision rather than treating an isolated bright area as a diagnosis. Treatment may involve medicines, radiotherapy, surgery, or symptom-focused care depending on the overall findings.

Contact the imaging or oncology team promptly for a rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, severe dizziness, or vomiting after the tracer or any contrast medicine. Seek emergency care for severe breathing trouble, collapse, or rapidly worsening swelling. These reactions are uncommon but require immediate assessment when they occur.
