Does pet allergy cause itchy eyes?

Pet allergy is an immune response to proteins found in skin flakes, saliva or urine. These particles can reach the eye surface and cause itching, watering, redness or a gritty feeling. Symptoms may start after contact with an animal or in a room where allergens remain on furniture and clothing. Itchy eyes can also come from infection, dry eye, irritants or contact-lens problems, so eye symptoms alone do not identify the cause.

Wash your hands after touching a pet and avoid rubbing your eyes. Keep pets out of the bedroom, wash bedding regularly and use cleaning methods that reduce settled dust. Rinsing the face or using a cool compress may soothe irritation. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable allergy treatment or eye drops, especially if you wear contact lenses, have another eye condition or take regular medicines.

Seek urgent care for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, marked swelling, an injury or a chemical splash. Get prompt advice if one eye is severely affected, discharge is thick, or symptoms persist despite avoiding the suspected trigger. Breathing difficulty, throat swelling, dizziness or widespread hives after animal exposure needs emergency help.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, whether testing could help, and which drops or medicines suit your eyes. Explain when symptoms begin, whether both eyes are affected, any discharge or vision change, contact-lens use, and what happens around different animals.
