Does pelvic MRI treat bicornuate uterus?

A bicornuate uterus develops with a divided upper uterine shape, often described as heart-shaped. Pelvic MRI uses magnetic fields to create detailed images of the uterus and nearby structures. It can help distinguish a bicornuate uterus from other differences in uterine development and may show the cervix, vagina, ovaries, and surrounding tissues. The scan itself does not reshape the uterus, remove tissue, or correct the underlying anatomy. A report is interpreted alongside your symptoms, menstrual history, pregnancy history, and any earlier imaging.

If MRI has been suggested, ask what question the scan is intended to answer and whether you need preparation. Share information about pregnancy, metal implants, kidney problems, allergies, or claustrophobia before the appointment. Management of a bicornuate uterus depends on your circumstances: some people need only follow-up, while others may need specialist advice during pregnancy or for repeated reproductive problems. MRI findings help clinicians plan that discussion; they are not a treatment by themselves.
