Can ovarian cysts cause pelvic pain?

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled or tissue-filled sac in or on an ovary. A cyst can cause pressure as it grows, and pain may be more noticeable around menstruation or with movement. Sudden severe pain can happen if a cyst ruptures or causes the ovary to twist. Other pelvic conditions can also cause similar symptoms, so pain alone cannot identify its cause.

Notice whether the pain is on one side, how it relates to your period, and whether you also have nausea, vomiting, fever, unusual bleeding, or dizziness. These details help a clinician assess the situation.

Arrange a medical assessment if pelvic pain is new, keeps returning, or interferes with daily activities. A clinician may ask about your cycle and symptoms and may recommend a pelvic examination or ultrasound. Until you are assessed, gentle activity, rest, and a heat pack may help if they feel comfortable. Use pain medicine only as directed and check that it is suitable for you, especially if you could be pregnant or have another medical condition.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden or severe pelvic pain, pain with fainting or marked weakness, repeated vomiting, fever, heavy vaginal bleeding, or a swollen and very tender abdomen. If pregnancy is possible, pelvic pain with bleeding, dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain needs prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can be serious.
