Does osteosarcoma cause persistent bone pain?

Osteosarcoma develops in bone-forming tissue. Pain may feel deep, aching or tender, and swelling or a firm area can develop nearby. Symptoms can also follow an injury or be mistaken for a muscle strain. Having persistent bone pain does not by itself identify its cause; infections, injuries and non-cancerous bone conditions can produce similar symptoms.

Arrange a clinical assessment if pain continues, returns repeatedly, worsens, or is accompanied by swelling or reduced movement. A clinician may examine the painful area and decide whether imaging or other tests are appropriate. Note where the pain is, when it occurs, what makes it better or worse, and whether you have noticed a lump, fever or an injury.

Seek urgent medical help for severe sudden pain, a new inability to use the limb, or pain after a significant injury. Prompt assessment is also sensible when ongoing pain disrupts sleep or normal activity, because the underlying cause needs to be checked rather than judged from the symptom alone.

Ask what could be causing the pain, whether the examination suggests a bone or nearby soft-tissue problem, which tests may clarify the cause, and how to manage discomfort while evaluation continues.
