Does oral rehydration therapy treat rotavirus infection?

Rotavirus infection can cause repeated watery diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and poor appetite, particularly in young children. Those losses can drain water and electrolytes faster than ordinary drinks replace them. An oral rehydration solution provides a measured combination of water, salts and glucose to improve absorption. It supports the child or adult while the immune system clears the infection, but it is not an antiviral treatment.

Offer frequent small sips or spoonfuls of oral rehydration solution, especially after diarrhoea or vomiting. If vomiting follows, wait briefly and try again more slowly. Continue breastfeeding or usual milk feeds where appropriate, and offer food when tolerated. Mix the solution exactly as instructed and do not add extra salt or sugar. Use separate towels and wash hands with soap and water to reduce spread.

Arrange urgent assessment for unusual sleepiness, confusion, fainting, a sunken appearance around the eyes, a very dry mouth, no tears when crying, markedly reduced urination, blood in stool, or inability to drink. Babies, older adults and people with ongoing medical problems can become dehydrated quickly and need early advice.
