Does antihistamine treatment treat skin writing?

Skin writing, also called dermatographism, causes a raised red line or welt after rubbing, scratching, or pressure. The reaction is linked to release of histamine in the skin. An oral antihistamine may calm itching and make the raised marks less noticeable. It does not repair a scratch or permanently change how your skin responds, so symptoms can return when the medicine wears off or when the skin is rubbed again.

Use an antihistamine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, especially if you have other conditions or take sedating medicines. Avoid vigorous scratching, tight clothing, and harsh soaps while the skin is reactive. Keep a simple record of triggers, timing, and response to treatment.
