Does oral antifungal treatment treat scalp ringworm?

Scalp ringworm, also called tinea capitis, is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair shafts. A cream or shampoo alone may not reach the infection within the follicles, so a clinician may prescribe an oral antifungal medicine. Treatment choice depends on the suspected fungus, age, other medicines, and medical history. Scaling, broken hairs, tenderness, or patchy hair loss can occur, and the scalp may need examination or testing before treatment.

Take the prescribed medicine for the full course and follow the exact dosing instructions. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, pillows, or towels while the infection is active; wash items that touch the scalp regularly. A clinician may recommend an antifungal shampoo as an addition, but it does not replace prescribed oral treatment. Household members and close contacts may need assessment if they have scaling or itching.
