Does oral antifungal treatment treat jock itch?

Jock itch, also called tinea cruris, is a fungal infection affecting the groin and nearby upper thighs. It often causes an itchy, scaly, expanding rash, while the centre may look less inflamed than the edge. The same fungus can affect the feet, and untreated athlete’s foot can help reinfect the groin.

A localised rash often responds to an antifungal cream or similar topical treatment. Tablets may be considered when the area is extensive, symptoms persist despite correct topical use, or infection keeps returning. A clinician should confirm the diagnosis because chafing, eczema, and other rashes can look alike.

Wash gently, dry the groin and inner thighs carefully, change out of sweaty clothing promptly, and wear loose underwear. Do not share towels or clothing. Check the feet for scaling or cracking and mention those symptoms during an assessment, since both areas may need treatment.

Use medicine exactly as directed and avoid applying a steroid cream by itself unless a clinician has advised it. If oral treatment is prescribed, provide a complete list of medicines and supplements and report previous liver problems or medication reactions.

Arrange medical care when the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, or not improving with appropriate topical treatment. Seek prompt advice for severe pain, pus, fever, marked swelling, or broken skin. People with diabetes or reduced immunity should arrange assessment earlier if the rash is persistent or extensive.
