Does oesophageal cancer cause vomiting blood?

Blood may look bright red, dark red, or like brown-black coffee grounds. Vomiting blood does not by itself show what is causing the bleeding, but it should never be managed by waiting to see if it settles.

Bleeding can occur when tissue in the oesophagus is irritated or damaged. Oesophageal cancer is one possible cause, while other digestive conditions can also lead to bleeding. The appearance of the vomit, other symptoms, and an examination help clinicians assess the situation.

Associated symptoms may include trouble swallowing, pain or pressure in the chest, black stools, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, or unexplained weight loss. Their absence does not make vomiting blood safe to ignore.

Seek urgent medical care now if you vomit blood or coffee-ground material. If possible, note when it began, its colour and amount, and whether you have passed black stools or felt faint. Bring a list of medicines, including pain relievers, blood-thinning medicines, and supplements.

Do not drive yourself if you feel weak, dizzy, confused, or short of breath. Avoid alcohol and do not take extra medicines for indigestion unless a clinician tells you to do so.

Call emergency services immediately for heavy or ongoing bleeding, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe chest or abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, or cold clammy skin. These can be signs that urgent treatment is needed.

Even a small amount of blood or coffee-ground vomit should be assessed urgently on the same day. Do not wait for another episode.

Once you are stable, ask what may have caused the bleeding, whether the oesophagus needs to be examined, which medicines to avoid or continue, and what symptoms should prompt another emergency visit. Share any recent swallowing problems, reflux, or weight change.
