Does nuchal translucency scan treat Down syndrome?

During the scan, ultrasound is used to measure the fluid space at the back of the baby’s neck and to assess aspects of early development. The result is combined with other pregnancy information in screening. It does not change the baby’s chromosomes and cannot confirm or exclude Down syndrome on its own.

A screening result that suggests a higher chance is not a diagnosis. Your maternity team can explain whether further screening or a diagnostic test is available, what each involves, and how the information may support decisions about care.

Attend the scan at the time recommended by your maternity team and ask when and how the result will be explained. Write down anything you do not understand. If the result raises questions, request a consultation with an obstetric clinician or genetic counsellor before deciding about further testing.

You can ask about the limits of the scan, the difference between screening and diagnosis, and what support is available regardless of the result. No scan is a treatment for a chromosomal condition.

Contact your maternity team if you are unsure how to arrange the scan, cannot attend the planned appointment, or have not received an explanation of the result. Seek urgent pregnancy care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, or fluid leaking, rather than waiting for a screening appointment.
