Short answer

Anti-inflammatory therapy for period pain can relieve painful periods by reducing substances that drive uterine cramping and inflammation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Action
NSAIDs reduce prostaglandins involved in uterine cramping.
Safety check
Ulcer, kidney, asthma, blood-thinner, and pregnancy histories matter.

How it works

During menstruation, the uterus releases prostaglandins that contribute to contractions and pain. NSAIDs reduce prostaglandin production, so they may lessen cramps, pelvic aching, and associated back pain. They tend to work best when started at the first sign of pain or bleeding, according to the product instructions or a clinician’s advice.

Pain that is severe, newly different, or not helped by appropriate treatment may have another cause, such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, or infection. Relief from a tablet does not explain why pain is present.

Using treatment safely

Check the active ingredient and follow the labelled dose. Take the medicine with food if advised, avoid combining products that contain the same NSAID, and tell a clinician about ulcers, kidney disease, asthma triggered by painkillers, blood-thinning medicines, or possible pregnancy.

A heat pack, rest, and gentle movement may complement medication. If you need pain relief repeatedly or must miss school or work, arrange a review rather than simply increasing the dose.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice for pain that is worsening, occurs outside periods, begins after sex, comes with fever or unusual discharge, or causes faintness. Get urgent help for sudden severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding with weakness, vomiting that prevents fluids, or a possible pregnancy with pain.

Questions for your clinician

Ask which anti-inflammatory is appropriate, when to take it, how long to use it, which side effects matter, and whether your pattern of pain needs assessment for an underlying condition.

Questions people ask

Can I take more than one anti-inflammatory?

Do not combine NSAIDs unless a clinician specifically tells you to; check labels for duplicate ingredients.

What if the pain keeps returning?

Arrange an assessment, because recurring or disabling pain may need investigation beyond symptom relief.
