Does neuroblastoma cause abdominal swelling?

Neuroblastoma is a cancer of immature nerve cells. It can begin near the adrenal glands or along nerve tissue in the abdomen. As a mass grows, it may make the tummy look fuller or feel firm. Swelling can also reflect pressure on nearby organs or, less often, fluid collecting in the abdomen.

The swelling may occur with a firm lump, discomfort, reduced appetite, constipation, vomiting, or feeling full after eating small amounts. Some children also have fever, tiredness, pale skin, bone pain, bruising around the eyes, or changes related to pressure on nerves. These features are not specific to neuroblastoma, so examination and testing are needed to identify the cause.

Arrange a medical assessment if abdominal swelling is persistent, increasing, or accompanied by a firm area, pain, poor appetite, or unexplained changes in energy. A clinician may examine the abdomen and review the child’s symptoms, growth, and general health. Depending on the findings, they may arrange imaging or blood and urine tests, then explain what the results mean.

Keep a brief record of when the swelling began, whether it changes during the day, and any bowel, appetite, vomiting, fever, or pain symptoms. Do not press repeatedly on a tender or firm area. Bring the record and a list of medicines to the appointment.

Seek urgent medical help if swelling is accompanied by severe or rapidly worsening pain, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, marked sleepiness, fainting, a very swollen or hard abdomen, or inability to pass stool or urine. These signs can indicate a complication that needs prompt assessment, whether or not neuroblastoma is involved.

Ask what could be causing the swelling and whether the examination suggests a mass, fluid, bowel problem, or another condition. You can also ask which tests are appropriate, how soon results may be available, what symptoms should prompt urgent help, and how to support eating, drinking, and comfort while assessment is under way.
