Does nebuliser treatment treat asthma?

Asthma causes sensitive, inflamed airways that can tighten and produce cough, wheeze, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. A nebuliser turns prescribed liquid medicine into a mist. In an acute episode, an airway-opening medicine may be given this way when symptoms are severe or when a person cannot use an inhaler effectively. Nebulised treatment is not automatically stronger or more suitable than an inhaler with a spacer. Preventer treatment, trigger reduction, and a written action plan remain relevant between episodes.

Follow your asthma action plan and use your reliever exactly as instructed. If a clinician has prescribed a nebuliser, check the medicine, dose, mask or mouthpiece, and cleaning routine before using it. Keep regular reviews so inhaler technique, preventer treatment, and triggers can be assessed. Do not borrow a nebuliser or alter treatment because symptoms feel familiar.

Seek emergency help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot speak normally, become drowsy or confused, develop blue or grey lips, or do not improve with your action plan. Urgent review is also needed when relief lasts only briefly, symptoms keep worsening, or you need reliever treatment more often than instructed. Sit upright while arranging help.

Ask when a nebuliser is appropriate for your asthma, how it compares with your inhaler and spacer, and which warning signs mean emergency care. Confirm your preventer routine, action-plan steps, equipment cleaning, and follow-up interval.
