Does nebuliser treatment help with shortness of breath?

A nebuliser changes liquid medicine into a mist that you breathe through a mask or mouthpiece. The medicine may relax airway muscles or reduce airway swelling, depending on what has been prescribed. This can help when breathing difficulty comes from conditions such as asthma or another problem involving narrowed airways. It will not correct every source of breathlessness, such as a heart problem, severe infection, a blood clot, or low oxygen from another cause. A clinician may first check your breathing, oxygen level, chest sounds, and the timing of your symptoms.

Use a nebuliser only with the medicine and instructions given to you. Sit upright, keep the mask or mouthpiece fitted as instructed, and take calm breaths during the treatment. Do not share equipment or add medicines that were not prescribed. If breathlessness keeps returning, arrange a medical review so the underlying cause and an ongoing treatment plan can be considered. A reliever inhaler may be more suitable in some situations.

Seek emergency help if breathing is rapidly worsening, you cannot speak in full sentences, your lips look blue or grey, you feel faint or confused, or you have severe chest pain. Get prompt medical advice if the nebuliser gives little relief, symptoms recur soon after treatment, or breathlessness comes with fever, coughing blood, or marked weakness. Do not delay urgent assessment while repeating treatments beyond your instructions.

Ask what is causing the breathlessness, which medicine belongs in the nebuliser, how often it should be used, and what response should prompt urgent help. Ask whether an inhaler with a spacer, oxygen assessment, or another treatment would better fit your needs.
