Does myomectomy help with heavy periods?

Myomectomy removes uterine fibroids while aiming to preserve the uterus. Fibroids that press into or distort the uterine cavity can contribute to heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, so removing them may improve the pattern of periods.

Bleeding may continue if adenomyosis, hormonal changes, a bleeding disorder, or another uterine problem is also present. The surgical approach depends on where the fibroids are situated, their size and number, and your future pregnancy plans.

Arrange an assessment if heavy periods interfere with daily life, cause tiredness, or require frequent changes of menstrual products. Your clinician may review your history, examine you, arrange imaging, and check for anaemia. Treatment options can include medicines or procedures as well as myomectomy.

Before surgery, ask how the fibroids relate to the uterine cavity, which approach is proposed, how recovery may affect work and activity, and whether another treatment better fits your goals.

Get urgent help for bleeding that rapidly soaks through protection, faintness, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or severe pelvic pain. After surgery, urgent review is also needed for fever, worsening pain, heavy bleeding, or a wound that becomes increasingly red or drains fluid.

Ask whether fibroids are the likely source of bleeding, whether anaemia needs treatment, which surgical route is suitable, and what changes in your periods would warrant follow-up.
