Does myelodysplastic syndromes cause easy bruising?

Myelodysplastic syndromes affect how the bone marrow makes blood cells. When platelet production is reduced or platelets do not work normally, small blood vessels may leak after minor knocks and leave purple, red, or brown marks. Bruising may appear on the arms, legs, or other areas without a remembered injury. Other blood-count changes can cause tiredness, breathlessness, pale skin, frequent infections, or bleeding from the nose or gums. Easy bruising has many other causes, including medicines, so it needs context and blood tests rather than self-diagnosis.

Tell your treating clinician about new, spreading, or frequent bruises and keep a record of when they appear. Protect the skin from knocks, use a soft toothbrush, and shave carefully. Do not start aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, supplements, or herbal products for pain without checking first, because some can increase bleeding. Continue prescribed treatment unless your clinician tells you otherwise. Keep scheduled blood tests and oncology or haematology appointments so blood counts can be reviewed.

Seek urgent help for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, blood in vomit, urine, or stool, black stools, a severe headache, new confusion, weakness, vision change, or a fall with a head impact. Contact your care team promptly for fever, unusual breathlessness, marked weakness, or a rapidly enlarging bruise. These symptoms may reflect low blood counts or bleeding that needs timely treatment.

Ask what your platelet and other blood counts show, which medicines or supplements to avoid, and how to respond to a cut or nosebleed. Discuss whether a bruise needs examination, what symptoms should prompt an emergency call, and how your treatment plan may affect bleeding risk.
