Does mumps cause testicular pain?

Mumps can cause inflammation of a testicle, usually after other signs of infection such as fever or swelling near the jaw. Pain may come with tenderness, swelling, warmth, or a heavy feeling in the scrotum. Mumps is not the only possible explanation: infection, injury, a hernia, and twisting of the testicle can also cause pain. Because twisting can damage the testicle quickly, the pattern and speed of the pain matter more than trying to diagnose it at home.

Contact a healthcare service promptly and explain that you have testicular pain with possible mumps. Rest, wear supportive underwear, and use a wrapped cool pack briefly if it eases discomfort. Avoid sports, heavy lifting, and sexual activity until assessed. Do not apply ice directly to the skin or delay care to monitor symptoms. If mumps is suspected, call before visiting so the service can plan an appropriate appointment.

Sudden or severe testicular pain, rapid swelling, a testicle sitting higher than usual, nausea, vomiting, faintness, or a tender abdomen needs emergency assessment. Seek prompt medical care for fever with scrotal redness, worsening pain, or difficulty passing urine. These signs can occur with problems that need treatment without delay.
