Does an MRI scan treat raised PSA?

PSA is a substance measured in a blood test. A raised result can have several explanations, including prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, or prostate cancer. An MRI is a diagnostic scan, not a medicine or procedure that removes the cause of the result.

A prostate MRI can show the size and structure of the gland and identify areas that need closer assessment. The report is considered alongside your PSA pattern, examination, symptoms, age, and previous results. An MRI result alone does not confirm or exclude every cause of a raised PSA.

Arrange a clinical review of the blood result rather than expecting the scan to change it. Your clinician may discuss repeating PSA, checking for urinary or prostate symptoms, treating an identified infection, or arranging an MRI. If imaging shows an area of concern, further assessment may include a specialist review and, in some situations, a biopsy.

Before the appointment, record when the PSA test was taken, any urinary changes, fever, pelvic discomfort, and medicines or supplements you use. Do not start antibiotics or stop prescribed treatment without medical advice.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, have fever or chills with painful urination, or feel suddenly very unwell. Contact your clinician soon about a raised PSA when it is accompanied by blood in the urine or semen, worsening urinary difficulty, or persistent pelvic or back pain. These symptoms need assessment; they do not by themselves identify the cause.

Ask what may have affected the PSA result, whether it should be repeated, and whether an MRI is appropriate. You can also ask what the scan can and cannot show, how the report will affect the plan, and when you should receive the result.
