Does an MRI scan treat Li-Fraumeni syndrome?

Li-Fraumeni syndrome is an inherited condition associated with an increased likelihood of developing certain cancers. MRI may be used as part of a personalised surveillance plan or to investigate a symptom or abnormal finding. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create images and does not change the inherited condition or destroy cancer cells.

The scan can help clinicians look at soft tissues and assess a known or suspected tumour without using ionising radiation. The right scan, timing, and body area depend on age, personal history, family history, symptoms, and the specialist team's plan.

Discuss the reason for the MRI with the clinician who arranged it. Tell the imaging team about implants, a pacemaker, kidney problems, pregnancy, and claustrophobia, and ask whether contrast will be used. Keep scheduled surveillance appointments even when you feel well unless your specialist changes the plan.

If imaging finds a concerning area, the next step may include another scan, specialist review, or tissue testing. Treatment is chosen for the specific tumour or cancer found, rather than for Li-Fraumeni syndrome itself.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe symptoms such as a seizure, new weakness, difficulty speaking, severe breathing trouble, heavy bleeding, or rapidly worsening pain. Do not wait for routine surveillance when a symptom is acute or serious.
