Does middle ear infection cause earache?

The middle ear is an air-filled space behind the eardrum. Infection can make its lining swell and fill the space with fluid. Pressure on the eardrum may produce a deep ache, sharp pain, or a blocked sensation. Young children may tug at the ear, cry more at night, or have trouble feeding because swallowing changes pressure.

Pain can come from the ear canal, teeth, throat, or jaw joint as well. A clinician can distinguish these causes by looking into the ear and checking nearby areas.

Rest, drink fluids, and use an age-appropriate pain medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician. Do not put oil, drops, or household remedies into the ear unless advised. An examination can show whether fluid, inflammation, or another problem is present and whether treatment is needed.

Get urgent medical help for severe pain, swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, a stiff neck, confusion, or a child who is difficult to wake. Arrange prompt review if pain is worsening, hearing changes suddenly, or symptoms continue despite home care.

Ask whether the eardrum looks inflamed or has fluid behind it, how to manage pain safely, and what changes should prompt a review. Mention any recent cold, ear injury, dental pain, or discharge.
