Does metformin for PCOS help with irregular periods?

PCOS can involve insulin resistance, higher insulin levels, and irregular or absent ovulation. Metformin improves the way the body responds to insulin. In some people, this supports more regular ovulation and bleeding; in others, periods remain irregular or need another treatment. It is not a direct period-regulating medicine for every cause of irregular bleeding.

A more regular period does not necessarily mean ovulation occurs in every cycle. If pregnancy is desired, discuss how ovulation will be assessed and whether a different fertility treatment is appropriate. Metformin may also be considered alongside nutrition, activity, and other PCOS care, depending on personal circumstances.

Take metformin exactly as prescribed and do not change or stop it without advice. Stomach upset, nausea, loose stools, and reduced appetite can occur, particularly when starting or changing the dose. Taking it with food may help. Tell your clinician about kidney problems, other medicines, and pregnancy plans so monitoring and treatment choices are suitable.

Contact your clinician if irregular bleeding persists, periods stop for a prolonged time, side effects prevent eating or drinking, or you may be pregnant. Seek urgent help for severe weakness, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or unusually heavy bleeding.
