Does meningitis cause neck stiffness?

The neck may feel painful or difficult to move, especially when trying to bend the chin towards the chest. This happens when inflammation around the brain and spinal cord irritates nearby tissues. Fever, headache, light sensitivity, vomiting, confusion, marked sleepiness or a rash can appear at the same time.

A stiff or sore neck can also follow muscle strain, an awkward sleeping position or another infection. The symptom alone does not determine its cause. Sudden onset, rapid worsening and the presence of neurological or whole-body symptoms are more concerning than mild stiffness after activity.

Get urgent medical advice if neck stiffness is new and comes with fever, severe headache, vomiting, light sensitivity or feeling very unwell. Avoid forcefully stretching the neck or driving when pain, weakness, confusion or drowsiness affects safety.

Write down the time symptoms began, any temperature reading and medicines already taken. Do not wait for every possible symptom before seeking help, particularly if the illness is progressing over a short period.

Call emergency services for difficulty waking, confusion, collapse, a seizure, breathing difficulty, new weakness or a purple or non-blanching rash. Suspected meningitis requires rapid assessment because serious illness can develop quickly.
