Can medicated shampoo help an itchy scalp?

Medicated shampoos contain active ingredients selected for particular scalp problems. Depending on the product, they may reduce yeast overgrowth, loosen scale, decrease inflammation, or control excess oil. Itching can also come from contact dermatitis, psoriasis, head lice, infection, dryness, or a reaction to hair products, so a shampoo aimed at dandruff may not address every cause.

Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. Children, people with reduced immunity, and people with extensive scalp disease may need tailored advice sooner.
