Does mammogram treat breast cancer?

During a mammogram, breast tissue is briefly compressed while X-ray images are taken. The images can show findings such as masses or areas of calcification that may need closer assessment. A mammogram cannot remove cancer cells or replace a biopsy. If an image is concerning, further imaging or tissue sampling may be recommended before a treatment plan is chosen.

Ask the imaging or breast team what the report means and whether additional views, ultrasound, or a biopsy is needed. If breast cancer is confirmed, treatment depends on the tumour's features, size, location, and whether it has spread. Options may include surgery, medicines, radiotherapy, or combinations selected by the oncology team.

Follow up promptly when you are asked to return after imaging or when a new breast change persists. Seek urgent help for severe pain, heavy bleeding after a procedure, fever, or rapidly worsening redness and swelling. A routine mammogram result should still be discussed if you have a new lump or other ongoing change.

Ask what was seen, whether the finding needs another test, when results will be available, and how a biopsy would guide treatment. If cancer is diagnosed, ask which treatments are being considered and why.
