Does lung lobectomy treat lung cancer?

During a lobectomy, a surgeon removes one section, or lobe, of the lung rather than the whole lung. The operation may remove nearby lymph nodes as well, so they can be examined for cancer cells. This helps the team understand whether the tumour has remained in the chest and whether additional treatment may be useful.

The decision considers the tumour’s position and size, whether it has spread, your breathing reserve, and other health conditions. Some people need treatment before or after surgery, while others may be offered a different approach if an operation would be unsafe or unlikely to remove all known disease.

Ask the lung cancer team how scans, tissue results, lung-function tests, and lymph-node findings affect the plan. Before surgery, discuss smoking or vaping, medicines that affect bleeding, breathing exercises, and how pain will be managed. Arrange practical help for the early recovery period and follow the breathing and movement instructions given after discharge.

After surgery, contact the care team promptly for worsening breathlessness, chest pain that is new or severe, fainting, confusion, fever, increasing redness or discharge from the wound, or coughing up more than a small amount of blood. Sudden severe breathing difficulty or collapse needs emergency help. New symptoms during cancer treatment also deserve timely advice rather than waiting for the next appointment.
