Does lung cancer cause unexplained weight loss?

Cancer can change appetite, taste, energy use, and the body's handling of nutrients. Breathlessness, pain, coughing, low mood, or difficulty swallowing may also make eating harder. Weight may fall gradually or more noticeably, sometimes alongside tiredness, weakness, persistent cough, chest discomfort, or recurrent infections. These changes are not specific to lung cancer: dental problems, thyroid disease, digestive conditions, infection, medication effects, depression, and other illnesses can also reduce weight.

A clinician will look at the pattern rather than one measurement. They may ask about appetite, food intake, bowel symptoms, swallowing, activity, medicines, smoking history, and other symptoms, then decide whether examination or tests are needed.

Book an appointment when weight loss is unplanned, continues, or occurs with a new cough, breathlessness, chest pain, persistent hoarseness, or marked fatigue. Keep a simple record of your weight trend, appetite, meals, swallowing symptoms, bowel changes, and medicines. Choose nourishing foods and fluids that you can tolerate while waiting for advice, unless a clinician has given you a different plan. A doctor or dietitian can help address symptoms that make eating difficult.

Get urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, become confused or faint, develop severe breathlessness, cough up blood, or have intense chest pain. Seek prompt assessment for rapid deterioration, severe weakness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and dizziness. Urgency is based on the severity of these symptoms, not on assuming that weight loss has one particular cause.
