Does lung cancer cause hoarse voice?

A tumour in the chest can press on or affect a nerve that helps move a vocal cord. This may make the voice rough, breathy, weak, or lower than usual. Hoarseness can also follow a cold, allergies, smoking, dehydration, overuse, reflux, or a problem in the throat or vocal cords. Pay attention to duration and accompanying symptoms such as a persistent cough, coughing up blood, difficulty swallowing, neck swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, or unexplained weight change. An examination can help determine whether the voice change starts in the throat or is linked to the chest.

Arrange an appointment if hoarseness does not settle, keeps returning, or is changing your ability to speak. Rest your voice, avoid shouting and smoking, drink fluids, and limit irritants that worsen your throat. Do not whisper for long periods because it can strain the voice. Tell the clinician about reflux symptoms, recent infections, smoking, workplace exposures, and any medicines. Depending on the findings, you may need an ear, nose, and throat assessment or chest imaging.

Get emergency help for hoarseness with severe difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, sudden facial or limb weakness, confusion, or rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling. Seek prompt medical review for blood when coughing, chest pain, worsening breathlessness, or hoarseness with a persistent cough. A voice change after an operation or injury also needs timely assessment.

Ask whether your vocal cords need to be examined, whether reflux or infection could be contributing, and whether chest assessment is appropriate. Explain how long the change has lasted, whether it fluctuates, and any breathing, swallowing, cough, or smoking history.
