Does liver resection treat bowel cancer?

Bowel cancer cells can travel to the liver and form secondary tumours. During a liver resection, the surgeon removes the visible liver tumours together with a margin of nearby tissue while preserving enough healthy liver to work normally. The operation may be considered when the liver disease can be removed safely, the position and number of tumours allow surgery, and the rest of the cancer is treatable. It does not remove the original bowel tumour, so bowel surgery, medicines, or other treatments may also be needed.

A specialist team reviews liver scans, the bowel tumour, any disease outside the liver, liver function, previous treatment, and your general health. Sometimes medicines are given first to shrink or control tumours, making surgery more practical. Ask how the team plans the order of treatments and what the operation would remove. Preparation may include nutrition advice, medication review, and planning help at home after discharge.

After an operation, seek urgent advice for fever, worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, increasing belly swelling, yellow skin or eyes, confusion, chest pain, or breathlessness. Wound redness, fluid leakage, or a sudden decline in energy also deserves prompt contact with the surgical team. Follow the discharge instructions for activity, wound care, and medicines.
