Does a liver function test treat hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that can be short-lived or persist in the body. Liver function testing looks for blood changes associated with liver-cell irritation and reduced processing function. It cannot clear hepatitis B, and an abnormal result does not by itself show whether antiviral medicine is needed.

Clinicians interpret these results with hepatitis B markers, viral activity testing, examination and sometimes imaging. The pattern over time matters, because liver inflammation can change even when a person feels well.

Attend recommended blood-test appointments and take prescribed treatment exactly as directed. Avoid alcohol if your clinician advises it, check supplements and over-the-counter medicines before using them, and tell healthcare professionals that you have hepatitis B.

Protect others by not sharing razors or toothbrushes and by covering blood-containing wounds. Household and sexual contacts can ask a clinician about testing and vaccination. Do not donate blood unless a healthcare service confirms it is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for confusion, severe sleepiness, vomiting blood, black stools, a rapidly enlarging abdomen, or intense upper-abdominal pain. Contact your clinician promptly for new jaundice, very dark urine, persistent vomiting, or marked weakness.

Ask whether your infection is acute or chronic, what your liver results mean, which additional tests are needed, and how often you should be monitored.
