Does leukaemia cause persistent fatigue?

Leukaemia affects blood-forming tissue and can disrupt the balance of healthy blood cells. Reduced oxygen-carrying red cells may leave someone drained, short of breath with activity, dizzy, or less able to concentrate. The illness itself can also create a feeling of exhaustion, while infection, disturbed sleep, pain, emotional strain, and treatment may add to the burden.

Persistent fatigue has many other explanations, including anaemia from other causes, thyroid problems, infections, medication effects, and low mood. A symptom by itself cannot confirm or rule out leukaemia.

Arrange a medical appointment if tiredness continues, limits routine activities, or comes with bruising, repeated infections, pale skin, breathlessness, swollen glands, or unexpected weight change. A clinician may ask when the fatigue began, review medicines and sleep, examine you, and request blood tests such as a full blood count.

Keep a brief record of energy levels, sleep, fever, bleeding or bruising, medicines, and any change in appetite. Pace demanding tasks, take regular rests, drink enough fluid, and avoid driving if exhaustion affects alertness.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding, a rapidly worsening condition, or a high fever with a weakened immune system. These problems can need prompt assessment regardless of the eventual cause of fatigue.

Ask what could explain your fatigue, whether a blood count or other tests are appropriate, which warning signs should prompt urgent contact, and how to manage activity and rest safely while you are being assessed.
