Does laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy treat ovarian endometrioma?

An ovarian endometrioma is a cyst linked with endometriosis, often containing old blood. During laparoscopy, the surgeon may open the abdomen through small incisions, separate the cyst from the ovary, and remove it for examination. Surgery may ease cyst-related pain or address a cyst that is enlarging or has uncertain features, but it does not remove endometriosis from every area of the pelvis. Treatment planning therefore considers pain, previous operations, fertility goals, ovarian reserve, and whether hormonal treatment or monitoring may be more suitable.

Ask a gynaecologist to review your scan and symptoms together. Discuss whether the endometrioma can be watched, treated medically, or removed, and how each choice may affect pain, future fertility, and ovarian tissue. If surgery is proposed, ask about the intended technique, the possibility of removing only the cyst, specimen testing, and a plan for endometriosis symptoms that remain afterward. Share any fertility treatment plans before scheduling surgery.

Get urgent assessment for sudden intense pelvic pain, vomiting, faintness, fever, or a rapidly swollen abdomen. These signs may occur with torsion, rupture, bleeding, or another acute pelvic problem. Following laparoscopy, seek advice for escalating pain, fever, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, wound discharge, or breathlessness. New severe symptoms should not wait for a planned follow-up.
