Does lactose intolerance cause bloating?

Short answer
Bloating is a very common presentation of Lactose Intolerance, especially after milk or other lactose-containing foods.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main mechanism
- Bacterial fermentation of undigested lactose
- Common feeling
- Fullness, tightness or abdominal distension
- Helpful approach
- Track foods, portions and timing
Why bloating happens
Lactase helps the small intestine digest lactose, the sugar found in milk. If lactase is limited, undigested lactose reaches the large bowel. Gut bacteria ferment it and release gas, which can make the abdomen feel full, tight or visibly distended. The amount of bloating can vary with the food, portion and how much lactose a person can digest.
Bloating after dairy can fit lactose intolerance, but it is not specific to it. Constipation, swallowed air, irritable bowel syndrome and other food sensitivities can also cause a full or swollen feeling. Look for a repeatable relationship rather than drawing a conclusion from one meal.
Ways to reduce symptoms
Write down what you eat and when bloating begins. Try smaller servings of lactose-containing foods, choose lactose-free versions, or pair dairy with a meal if your clinician agrees. Yoghurt and hard cheeses may be tolerated differently from milk because their lactose content and digestion vary. A pharmacist can explain lactase products and how to use them.
If dairy is reduced, include a reliable source of calcium and vitamin D through suitable foods or a clinician-approved supplement. Do not make broad dietary changes without a plan if you are losing weight or have other digestive symptoms.
When to seek care
Book an appointment if bloating is persistent, painful, progressively worsening, or associated with altered bowel habits, vomiting, weight loss or blood in the stool. Get urgent help for severe pain, repeated vomiting, a rigid swollen abdomen, fainting or trouble breathing.
Questions for your doctor
Does my bloating pattern suggest lactose intolerance? Would testing help? Which dairy portions may be reasonable for me? What foods can replace dairy nutrients? Could constipation or another digestive problem be contributing?
