Does kidney infection cause painful urination?

Pain may feel like burning, stinging, or soreness while urine passes. Kidney infection may also cause an urgent or frequent need to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pain in the side or back, fever, chills, nausea, or unusual fatigue. It commonly begins when bacteria move from the bladder toward the kidneys. Painful urination can have other causes, such as bladder infection, irritation, sexually transmitted infection, or a stone, so the symptom does not identify one cause by itself.

Contact a clinician promptly if painful urination comes with fever, flank pain, vomiting, or a marked change in how you feel. A urine sample can help guide treatment. Follow any prescribed medicine instructions and finish the course unless your prescriber changes it. Drink fluids as tolerated, but do not force fluids if you are vomiting or have been told to restrict them. Avoid taking someone else’s antibiotics.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, have severe side or back pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, or very little urine. Fever and urinary pain deserve extra attention during pregnancy and in people with diabetes, kidney disease, or reduced immunity. Call emergency services if you are hard to wake, struggling to breathe, or rapidly deteriorating.

Ask whether a urine test is needed, whether the infection may involve the kidneys, and how quickly you should expect symptoms to settle after treatment. Ask which changes require reassessment and whether another cause should be considered if burning continues.
