Does kidney infection cause fever?

A kidney infection may begin after bacteria move from the bladder into the upper urinary tract. Fever can signal that the body is responding beyond the bladder, especially when it comes with shivering, pain beneath the ribs, cloudy or bloody urine, frequent urination, or vomiting. Fever has many other causes, however, so it cannot identify a kidney infection on its own. A clinician may use symptoms, examination, and urine testing together.

Get urgent help for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, severe flank pain, or fever with shaking chills and a rapidly worsening illness. Pregnancy, a catheter, a known blockage, or reduced immune function should lower the threshold for prompt assessment.
