Does keratosis pilaris cause red bumps on the arms?

Keratosis pilaris forms when keratin, a natural skin protein, builds up around hair follicles. The plugs create many tiny, rough bumps that may be red, pink, brown, or close to the surrounding skin colour. The outer upper arms are a frequent site, although the thighs, cheeks, and buttocks can also be affected. The bumps may feel rough like sandpaper and are often more noticeable when the skin is dry. They are not the same as acne, and redness can increase with friction, cold weather, or scratching. A clinician can check a widespread, painful, or unusual rash for another cause.

Keep showers warm rather than hot, use a mild cleanser, and apply a thick moisturiser after bathing. Arrange an assessment if the bumps appear suddenly, spread quickly, become painful, ooze, form blisters, or come with fever or facial swelling. Also seek advice if only one unusual spot changes rapidly or if the rash does not behave like your usual rough, follicle-centred bumps.
