Does IPL photofacial treat sun spots?

Sun spots are flat areas of increased pigment linked with cumulative ultraviolet exposure. IPL sends broad-spectrum light into the skin, where pigment absorbs part of that energy. The treated spot can temporarily look darker before it gradually becomes less noticeable as the skin sheds and settles.

Not every brown mark is a sun spot. A mark with uneven colour, an irregular border, growth, bleeding, crusting, or a new change needs clinical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment. Recent tanning and some skin tones can increase the chance of unwanted pigment changes.

Show the clinician all marks you want treated and mention recent sun exposure, tanning products, medicines, and past pigment reactions. Use sun protection before and after treatment, avoid picking at darkened areas, and follow instructions about cleansing and active skincare.

Arrange a skin check for any spot that changes in size, shape, colour, or sensation, or that bleeds or does not heal. After IPL, contact the provider for blistering, spreading swelling, severe pain, or a reaction that is worsening.
