Can steroid injections treat skin sarcoidosis?

Skin sarcoidosis, also called cutaneous sarcoidosis, can cause firm bumps, plaques, or other changes in areas such as the face, arms, trunk, or old scars. The appearance can overlap with other skin conditions, so diagnosis may require a clinical examination and sometimes a biopsy.

An intralesional steroid is placed into a selected lesion to reduce local inflammatory activity. It may be considered when lesions are limited and accessible. It is not a substitute for checking whether sarcoidosis affects other organs, and it may not suit extensive, thin, infected, or diagnostically uncertain areas.

Arrange review with a dermatologist if a firm lesion persists, changes, or appears in several places. Tell the clinician about breathing symptoms, persistent cough, eye symptoms, fatigue, joint pain, or previous sarcoidosis because skin treatment should be planned alongside overall assessment.

Ask whether the lesion needs confirmation before injection and whether local treatment is enough for the pattern present. Discuss the injection site’s risk of soreness, colour change, or skin thinning. Keep a simple record of lesion size, symptoms, and new areas so the response is easier to assess.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly changing lesions, ulceration, significant pain, spreading redness, or drainage. Get urgent help for new breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe eye pain, sudden vision changes, or marked weakness, as these symptoms need assessment beyond a local skin injection.
