Can steroid injections treat alopecia areata?

Alopecia areata is an immune-related form of hair loss that can create smooth, sharply defined patches on the scalp, beard area, eyebrows, or other hair-bearing skin. An intralesional steroid is injected into selected patches to reduce the local immune inflammation around hair follicles.

The approach is generally considered when there are limited areas that a clinician can reach safely. It is not a promise that hair will regrow, and it does not cure the underlying tendency for alopecia areata to recur. The clinician will also check whether scaling, scarring, broken hairs, or another pattern points to a different diagnosis.

Book a dermatology review for new or expanding patches, especially when eyebrows, eyelashes, beard hair, or several body areas are involved. Take clear photographs in consistent lighting so changes can be compared over time. Avoid rubbing, scratching, or harsh chemical treatments on affected skin.

Ask which patches are suitable, how the medicine will be delivered, and what signs would mean the plan should change. Local soreness, temporary colour change, or a small area of skin thinning can occur. Tell the clinician about medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any previous reaction to injections.

Seek prompt assessment if hair loss is sudden and extensive, the scalp is painful or scaly, or the skin is shiny and scar-like. Eye-area hair loss deserves timely review because eyelashes and brows help protect the eyes. Get urgent help for eye pain, marked redness, or vision changes.
