Does intertrigo cause skin rash?

Intertrigo often affects the groin, underarms, under the breasts, or other touching folds. The affected skin may look red, shiny, raw, or darker than nearby skin and may feel itchy, burning, or tender. Cracks, moisture, an odour, or small separate spots can occur when another infection develops in the irritated fold. A Skin Rash has many possible causes, so appearance and location need to be considered together.

Wash gently, rinse away cleanser, and pat the fold fully dry. Change damp clothes promptly and use breathable fabrics that reduce rubbing. Keep the surfaces apart with clean, dry clothing or a suitable barrier advised by a clinician. Avoid fragranced sprays, harsh scrubbing, and unprescribed combination creams. If the rash persists, a clinician can check whether antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, or another treatment is appropriate.

Book an assessment when the rash is spreading, recurrent, cracked, very painful, or not improving with moisture and friction control. Get prompt help for fever, pus, marked warmth, rapidly increasing swelling, or red streaks. Seek advice sooner if diabetes, immune suppression, or reduced sensation makes it harder to notice worsening skin damage.

Ask whether the rash is consistent with intertrigo, whether a secondary infection should be checked, and which cleanser, barrier, or medicine fits the site. Tell the clinician how long it has lasted and whether sweating, friction, or a new product preceded it.
