Does inguinal hernia cause abdominal pain?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak area of the lower abdominal wall into the groin. It may cause a pulling, pressure, burning, or aching feeling in the lower abdomen or groin, and a lump may become more noticeable when standing, coughing, or straining. Abdominal pain has many other causes, so it does not establish that a hernia is present.

Arrange a clinical assessment for new or recurring groin pain, especially if you notice a bulge. Until you are assessed, avoid activities that clearly worsen pain or involve heavy straining. Do not try forceful pressure on a painful lump. A clinician can examine the area, consider other causes of abdominal pain, and explain whether monitoring or treatment is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden severe or escalating abdominal or groin pain, a tender lump that will not settle, vomiting, marked abdominal swelling, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. These symptoms can signal a complication that needs rapid assessment. Also seek urgent help if you feel faint, confused, or severely unwell.

Ask whether the location and triggers of your pain are consistent with a hernia, whether a lump changes with coughing or standing, and what signs should prompt urgent care. Mention prior abdominal surgery, bowel symptoms, vomiting, and work or exercise that involves lifting.
